From The Principal
Kia ora tatou katoa, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Bula vi naka, Kia orana Nga mihi nui ki a koutou, Namaste, Nihao, He mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa! Greetings to you all.
We are in our final week of Term 2. Thank you to all the parents who have supported the school during this busy term with all the trips, sporting events, etc. We do appreciate your support as we see it as a partnership between parents, caregivers and school. Everyone is ready for a well-earned rest and there has been a lot of staff and children succumbing to the winter chills and ills. We all need to recharge our batteries for the next term.
ABSENTEEISM AND LATENESS - Please remember to contact the office as early as possible if your children/child are going to be absent, as we are legally required to phone everyone to check if your child is genuinely absent. As you can appreciate, with up to 70 children away in a day this is a mammoth task for the office staff. Please encourage your children to get to school before the bell rings at 8.50 am so that they are not marked late. The Minister of Education is looking closely at this at the moment and we don’t want any unpleasant phone calls to our families from the Truancy Officers.
UNIFORMS - Thank you to the parents who continually make sure their children are well presented each day and wearing the correct uniform, particularly PLAIN black shoes. We really appreciate your efforts and we can be proud of our children’s personal presentation.
PARKING AND USING THE DRIVEWAY BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL - We are concerned at the number of parents who are parking in the driveway and causing congestion for the traffic. The staff now park their vehicles in front of the main entrance instead of the back car park by the hall. This allows our children to have more concrete areas to play in, especially in the winter. If your children are able to walk to your car that is parked on the roadside instead of the driveway we would appreciate that very much. Thanks for your co-operation in this matter.
STUDENT LED CONFERENCES - Thank you for attending the SLC the last two nights. We are very happy with the way that the children presented their goals and evidence of their hard work to you in such a confident manner. We are proud of all the efforts that everyone has put in to get these conferences to a standard in which the children are able to talk about their learning in such an articulate way.
Our next SLC’s will be held in Term 4, Week 4, Wednesday 16 November for Years 1-3 and Thursday 17 November for Years 4-6.
YEAR 6 REPORTS - Parents and Caregivers of the Year 6 students should all receive a Mid Year Report today. Please check that your child has one.

Looking Ahead
MATHS OLYMPIAD – Our Maths Olympiad has been moved to coincide with Maths Week which is in Week 2 of Term 3. Details will follow later in the term.
MILK BOTTLES – We are currently in need of clean, 2 litre milk bottles for our worm tea. If you have any could you please place them by the worm farm. Thank you, we appreciate your support.
Road Patrol - We need someone to do Thursday morning from 8.30 to 8.50 and Friday afternoon from 3.00 - 3.15. Please see Catherine Holdom in Room 26 or call on 5770070 ext 826.
CHOCOLATES - On Friday 5 August the oldest child in each family will be bringing home a box of chocolates to sell at $2.50 a bar. We would ask that you make every effort to sell as many bars as possible. Watch out for the exciting prizes. This year every child will be given the chance to win a prize, every box sold goes into the lucky prize draw and prizes will go to the child that sells the most in each year level as well as the family who sell the most boxes of chocolates. This is our most successful fundraising event for the year and we thank the Elm Park community in advance for their support. We are also looking for co-ordinators to assist with this fundraiser. SOCCER - After a lot of rain and postponing, the soccer team finally had their first game. It was against Wakaaranga and played on our wet and muddy field. Not sure if we were playing soccer, swimming or mudsliding! It was a great first game with some good passing. The teams were very even but Wakaaranga beat us 4-3. Our second game against Owairoa was great to watch. The Owairoa field was also very muddy. Due to a museum trip our team was a bit depleted but those who joined us for the first time did very well. Anaiyah is to be congratulated on some excellent goals saved. It was his first time to play goalie in a soccer match and is definitely man of the match. We lost a close game 2-0.
SCHOOL DANCE CLASSES – Term 3, commencing 12th August. 9 Friday lunchtime lessons. 40 minutes long. Limited spaces Year 1-6. End of term assembly performace. Please see office for an enrolment form.
Working Bee - Saturday 13 August 2pm - 4pm
Bring your gardening tools and help us to relocate some plants to around the new classrooms. Put this date in your diaries and bring the whole family - many hands make light work.
The United Maori Mission (UMM) is returning to its foundations of encouraging educational opportunities for disadvantaged young Maori men and women. Over the past 74 years the Mission has provided a stepping stone for many young men and women who are now pillars within their community. This has been achieved through the provision of affordable accommodation and apprenticeship programs. There are a significant number of Maori businessmen and tradesmen whose success is a direct result of the support and mentoring they received during their stay at United Maori Mission. A current initiative is to assist with providing a way for Maori and Pacific Island boys in New Zealand to gain secondary education at one of the country's top schools, Auckland Grammar School. It is our intention to support them through their secondary years by way of partnering with Auckland Grammar School and support services. Focus on Children
Room 10 read a poem about a little green frog jumping from log to log. We drew a frog and coloured in the legs with thick crayons. Then we dyed our frogs using light or dark green dye. We made a zig zag tongue using red paper. After we had finished Miss Charlesworth glued our frogs onto a lily pad. Here are some of our awesome frogs.
