From The Principal
Kia ora tatou katoa, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Bula vi naka, Kia orana Nga mihi nui ki a koutou, Namaste, Nihao, He mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa! Greetings to you all.
Here we are almost at the end of Term 3. Everyone seems to be getting into the spirit of the Rugby World Cup, which is wonderful to see. I hope everyone is enjoying the rugby games.
Last week we were privileged to see and be involved with the 2011 Talent Quest organized by Mrs Raenette Taljaard. We were thoroughly entertained by some of our very talented children. The funds raised from ticket sales are to go towards our Y6 Camp for 2012. Thanks to everyone for your support.
Our Years 4, 5, 6 Cross Country was held on Tuesday on a lovely fine day. Well done to all children for your participation and thanks parents for coming to watch.
We are currently preparing to place children in classes for 2012. This is a huge job and we take it very seriously. We try to place your child with peers and a teacher that best suits their needs and personality.
If you have any particular requests for your child/ren to be with or not with other children please can you email secretary@elmpark.school.nz with your requests as soon as possible or write to the Principal. Please do not request a teacher. Please ensure you notify the school office in writing if your child is not returning in 2012. Also, if you have child starting in 2012 and have not yet completed an enrolment form, please do so as soon as possible.
Parent Contribution/School Donations - Thank you to the parents who have paid their parent contribution for 2011, we really appreciate your support. As you are aware, schools are funded on a per student basis at the level that reflects the decile rating for the socio economic status of the community. Unfortunately this amount does not cover all the costs incurred as we strive to provide the highest quality education for our students at Elm Park. The Government expects that parents and communities will contribute to the shortfall. Almost 10% of our budgeted income comes from parent contributions. Elm Park has kept the parent contribution at $160.00 per child for at least 6 years. The school relies on these funds to provide extra activities and programmes to support learning across the school.

Looking Ahead
BEFORE SCHOOL - We have noticed that many children are arriving at school as early as 7.45 am. We understand that many of you have to start work early however, although some staff are usually on site they are preparing for the day or have meetings and cannot supervise the children until 8.15 am. Please do not send your children early, if so we will have to send them to Kids Korner (our before and afterschool care facility) which will result in a charge for this service.
HOWICK INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL ORIENTATION for 2012 – Elm Park School community and prospective students for 2012 are invited to attend an orientation on Saturday 24 November at 9.30 am in the school hall. Parents are welcome to accompany their son or daughter on this visit. PARKING – As you are aware, we have been advised by the Police to close the road alongside the school office, for the safety of your children. The gates will be closed from 8.30 – 9.15 am and 2.30 - 3.15 pm. If you find yourself locked in at any stage, you will need to wait for the gates to be unlocked at the due time. Thank you all for your cooperation so far. We are also experiencing parents dropping their children off in the access way in front of the boom gate and in people’s driveways. This is causing traffic jams. As this is dangerous, please drop your children along Gossamer Drive, being sure to be legally stopped (not on a yellow line) at all times. Because of the problems we are having, the Community Constable and other police officers will be popping in regularly to check our drivers habits – let’s give them a pleasant surprise!

CROSS COUNTRY - On Tuesday the 27th of September, the Year 4, 5 and 6's ran their Cross Country. The sun was out, field soft, and a little mud for all to enjoy. Here are the top 3 finishes from each race which will go on to represent Elm Park at the Inter-school Cross Country in Wk 1, Term 4.

GYMNASTICS - On Thursday 8th September a group of Year 5 and 6 students entered the HPPA Eastern Zone Primary Schools Gymnastic Festival. These students have been working hard for two terms learning a range of routines for the Mat, Floor and Beam. Each student achieved their personal best and did a wonderful job of representing Elm Park School. A big Congratulations to Steven Zhu, Tyrell Kanny , Yazan Hatem and Jeremy Takau who won FIrst Place in the Year 5 Boys Competition. This Team of boys were then invited to take part in the Champion of Champions Gymnastics Competition last week where Yazan Hatem achieved an astounding 12th equal in the Individual Year 5 Boys Competition. Thank you to all the gymnasts for their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm this year!!!
WHAT DOES THE BOT DO? - The board is accountable for the school’s performance, and emphasises strategic leadership, sets the vision for the school, and ensures that the school complies with legal and policy requirements. The BOT sets policies at governance level and outline clear delegations to the principal. The board and principal form the leadership team, and the principal reports to the board. The board is proactive in its operations and decision making and does not involve itself in the administrative details of the day-to-day running of the school. Enhancing student achievement is its focus. The board of trustees is the Crown entity responsible for the governance and the control of the management of the school. The board is responsible for ensuring that the school provides a safe environment and quality education for all its students. Boards are also responsible for overseeing the management of personnel, curriculum, property, finance and administration.
Focus on Children
Room 4 are learning how to use interesting words in their writing. To celebrate Spring they wrote an acrostic poem. This is the first time they have written a poem. They are very proud of their success.

This Spring we start making local food effortless for East Auckland by bringing the ‘Ooooby Box’ to your doorstep!
