From The Principal
Kia ora tatou katoa, Talofa, Malo
e lelei, Bula vi naka, Kia orana Nga mihi nui ki a koutou, Namaste, Nihao,
Greetings to you all.
Student Led Conferences: Thank you everyone who came to the Student
Led conferences last week. I am sure that you all found them very informative
and a reflection on where your child/ren are at in their learning and where
they need to be next.
New Building: We are hoping to move some classes into the newly
renovated building next week. Room 31
students will be relocated to Room 7 and Room 7 students will be relocated into
Room 4. Other classes will be relocating over the holidays for the beginning of
the new year 2013.
Farewells: Sadly we will be saying farewell to a number of staff at
the end of the year for various reasons.
We thank them all for their amazing contributions to our community and
wish them all the best for the future.
Mr Armstrong, our lovely caretaker, is hanging
up his hat and retiring at the end of the year.
Mrs Robyn Commins is also
retiring from teaching. She has had an 18 year association with Elm Park. Many students have been taught by her,
especially in Reading.
Mrs Tracy Venter has decided to
trade teaching for a career in her family business after 10 years at Elm Park.
Mrs Katherine De Haast is also
leaving for Vietnam to join her husband in his new job. Katherine has been working in our library and
co-ordinating our International Student programme.
Mr Nick Fitzgerald is heading for
Canada to be with family and friends on the start of his big OE. Nick has been
actively involved as our sports and PE co-ordinator for the past 3 years.
Miss Gaea Ladley is leaving to
teach at another school after 3 terms at Elm Park.
Y6 students: Our Year 6 students are visiting their various
Intermediate schools. A reminder to ensure that your child is enrolled at an Intermediate
before the end of this year. Please contact your Intermediate for enrolment
details as soon as possible. Many of our students will have visited Farm Cove
Intermediate today and I know they are all excited and perhaps a little
apprehensive about their new surroundings.
Have a lovely weekend and
hopefully we will have some sun???
Have a lovely weekend

Focus on Children
In Room 20, we have
been learning about Globalisation. We
have been talking to students in other countries to find out about how
schooling is different around the world.
On Monday the 12th
of November, Room 20 and Room 16 skyped Manor Lakes School in Melbourne.
Here’s what we found
out:
· They have an i-pad each; we share 5 i-pads in some
classes.
· They have no swimming pool; we do!
· They start at 8.50am and finish at 3.00pm – the same
as us.
· They have over 1400 kids at their school (Grades
1-12) and about 60 classrooms; we have 30 classes and 603 kids.
· They have i-portfolios, which are on their i-pads;
our e-Portfolios are similar but online.
· They have been learning Indonesian and Auslan
(Australian Sign Language) and were very impressed with our Maori!
· We are both Apple schools – using Apple computers.
· They call their teachers by their first name; we use
our teachers’ last names.
· We have camp in Year 6; they get to go on camp in
Years 3, 5, 7 and 9! Wow!
It was Manor Lakes’
first time to skype, but we have been lucky to have already talked to Elm Park
School in England and St Fidelis’ School in Melbourne.
In the next couple
of weeks, Room 16 will be joining us again for a sleepover so we can skype Elm
Park for the second time (and maybe some other classes if we are lucky!).
We can’t wait to
find out more about these other schools!

Steph and Ashlee
