Elm Park School Newsletter Term 2 - Week 5 - 25th May 2012

Friday 25th May – Term 2 Week 5

Value Focus for next week: Quality / Respect

From The Principal

Kia ora tatou katoa, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Bula vi naka, Kia orana Nga mihi nui ki a koutou, Namaste, Nihao, Greetings to you all.

We are well into Autumn and we are certainly surrounded by the leaves that are falling from the trees. Poor Mr Armstrong is busy cleaning up all the leaves everywhere, but at least the sun is shining.

This is a breakdown of the School achievement data for the past 2 years. As you can see for yourself we are doing extremely well overall.

You would have been aware that the new Minister of Education, Hekia Parata, has announced the Government’s new changes to education. These changes will have an impact on your child’s education if they take place. Class sizes will increase and the extra staffing and support will no doubt be eroded. Children who require extra help will invariably miss out on the help. This could also mean that Junior classes will have 4-5 additional students in them. This will impact on teacher’s time spent with each child and in turn their learning.  Check out this website: http://www.beehive.govt.nz/speech/speech-notes-raising-achievement-all-budget-2012.
The Minister has invited comments and feedback and this can be sent to her at hekia.parata2@parliament.govt.nz.
We would also like to encourage you to write a letter to the New Zealand Herald.  This can be done online, but it is a good idea to write your letter in a Word document first so that you can easily check that it is 200 words or less.  If your letter is too long it will be rejected for publication or severely edited.
We also encourage you to write to your local Member of Parliament christianname.surname@parliament.govt.nz
And send a copy to the Prime Minister too john.key@parliament.govt.nz

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS -  Thank you to the families that supported the Entertainment book fundraiser - you can still purchase Entertainment books for yourself and / or your family and friends.
TOOTHPASTE AND TOOTHBRUSHES - Year 5 will be bringing home a toothpaste and toothbrush fundraiser.  The children get to keep the profit.
TE TUHI - Elm Park students in Years 4-6 have been involved in a wonderful learning opportunity by working with the amazing sculptor Gregor Kregar. Gregor is a Slovenian artist who now lives in New Zealand. He is famous all over the world for his architectural sculptures. Gregor inspired Elm Park students to design and construct Dream Houses. We worked with Gregor's pre-cut cardboard triangles to make some incredible structures. In fact, Gregor and the Staff at Te Tuhi Gallery quickly saw that the structures were so strong they could be exhibited in the small gallery off the foyer. We felt really privileged to have our structures displayed there. They hang off the wall and ... the ceiling! Strange but true. Go down to the Te Tuhi Gallery to check out how Gregor has transformed the Te Tuhi entry space. The amazing structure has been made with 5 truck-loads of demolition timber. “It is so strong it would be the safest place to be if there was an earthquake” said some engineers. We are really proud of our contribution!

Focus on Children

Room 30 have been learning to use descriptions in our writing. Can you guess what the things are that we are describing?

This thing is heavy and it looks like a person’s head. It has a mouth, a nose and eyes. This thing is brown. You can put it on your face and people can be scared.
Eric

When you touch this thing it feels smooth. It has stripes at the bottom all different colours. It has a golden curled up tail. It has a lot of black at the top and a golden face and two red stripes. When you put this in the dark it looks spooky. It is made of wood and it looks like it is made in Egypt. It is also painted. Can you guess what it is?
Oliver

This thing is crinkly and it has swirls. It might make your eyes go dizzy. When you flap it in your face it blows wind on you. The colours are yellow, blue and red. If you look carefully it has camouflaged patterns on it. Can you guess what it is?
Molly

When you touch it it feels silky and precious. It has black wavey whiskers. It has a golden tail shaped like a snail shell. Can you guess what it is?
Kayla

When you touch it it makes you feel dizzy and fuzzy. It has swirly, shining, colourful and even pretty colours. It goes quickly if you spin it. It has beautiful patterns on the middle. It is gold. It has a fierce face like a taniwha. Can you guess what it is?
Alice

This thing is crinkly. When you look at it your eyes feel dizzy. It is 3 colors. If you look carefully you can see the patterns. It has 2 sharp corners and it is smooth. It gives cool air. You can hear woosh woosh! If you move it forward, the patterns are dark. If you move it back, the patterns are light. Can you guess what it is?

Parenting tip from Kiwi Families:
Being consistent and following through on what you say, is good parenting practice, but equally so is listening to your child and apologising if you have made a mistake. Parents don’t have to be right 100% of the time. It is okay if they see that you’re not perfect either and by saying ‘I’m sorry’ you are being a good role model.
