Yet another busy two weeks at Elm Park School.
Construction - Finally, our modernisation of the Junior Block is underway. Glen Watson and his building crew are demolishing the old classrooms in readiness for the new roof and refurbishment of the original 1967 classrooms Rooms 1- 4. We are hoping that these rooms will be completed by the end of the next holidays.
Room 31 - Our new entrants (Year 0) class has begun in our Library seminar area, now called Room 31, due to the fact that we are short of space until our old rooms are renovated. The children are settling into their colourful environment very well with Mrs Ray Van Niekerk as their teacher.
Festival Choir - We successfully hosted the Farm Cove Festival Choir performances over two evenings last week with audiences of 300 each evening. Our sincere apologises if you missed out on getting a ticket, they sold rapidly in the first few days. Many thanks to Mrs Raenette Taljaard for her sterling work with our choir and musical groups, we were extremely proud of our children.
International students - Last Thursday we hosted 80 students, 13 teachers and the Principal and Deputy Principal from Shinan Gauken Elementary School in Japan for the day. Our visitors were welcomed in fine style by our Kapa Haka group. The Japanese students demonstrated a series of games, origami and calligraphy to our Year 5 & 6 students. It was an amazing event for all, thanks to Mrs Katherine De Haast for her hard work organizing this visit for us. The Shinan County students from Korea also left on Friday after 3 weeks at Elm Park School.
Speech Finals - This week we hosted the Zone Speech finals in our Auditorium. The standard of speeches was extremely high and the two adjudicators were Pam Hook and Alistair Munro. The place getters were: first place, Jamie Tukeri from Sunnyhills School, first runner up was Bianca Matulich-Watson from Our Lady Star of the Sea and Damon Jackson from Point View School was Second runner up. Lupo Hall from Elm Park School delivered an excellent speech “Proud to be a Kiwi” and we were extremely proud of him. Thanks to Mrs Karen Allen, Miss Irma Hughes and Mrs Dawn Walker for the organisation for the evening.
Have a lovely weekend.
Parent Help Needed - Just Half An Hour - No expertise required!! We are asking for parent help to finish planting and mulching our native trees on the back playing field. The trees are placed where they should be planted and the mulch is in piles to be distributed around and between the plants at a depth of about 10cm. We would appreciate any help - if only an hour when it suits you or alternatively, when you come to drop off or pick up your child, why not spend half an hour together planting and mulching? If needed we have spades and buckets for your use. Your help will be greatly appreciated and you will be contributing to a long term vision of having a beautiful native tree grove at Elm Park School for the benefit of birds, insects and of course, our students. Any queries please contact Monica Meikle through the school office.
McCain’s School Veggie Patch Programme is still running in schools. Collect the barcodes from your frozen veggie packs and drop them in to the box outside Mrs Plowright’s office. Would you like to see Elm Park students planting their own veggie seeds and learning about healthy eating at the same time?
